Growing up Simmons has to be challenging. For Diggy Simmons watching his evolution from silly kid brother, fashion model, actor, and rapper growing up in the public eye has to be unnerving. Hailing from hip-hop royalty, the business is literally pulsing through his veins. The son of Joseph Simmons, of Run DMC, and nephew of Russell Simmons, the stakes are much higher. In early August, Diggy Simmons appeared on Power 105 “The Breakfast Club” to promote his single, “It is What it Is.” It was something different about him; maturity, transformation, Lil Diggy grew up. Now he’s back with his latest project, “Lighten Up”, an extension of the new evolved young man I listened to early this year.
In the opening track “It is What It Is” showcases a new sound, mature, better production and a artist who is focused.
“It Is What It Is
Yeah, It Is What It Is
Yeah
Never play yourself, pay yourself
It Is What It Is
Gon’ head do it big”
Diggy took to Instagram with a heartfelt post, “Forever thankful for your patience, love and support. There are many themes that I explore in this project. The most prominent one being “journey”. Our emotional connection to our journey, how we learn from our journey, moving past trauma’s in our journey, and the practice of championing ourselves, no matter where we are in our journey. “Lighten Up” is an affirmation and reminder to myself and anyone that needs it. We’re all trying to figure it out. Don’t be so hard on yourself in the process of it. Shifting the focus to what can be, and not what “should” be.”
