“Like a kaleidoscope every twist of the wrist or step on the street changes the visual landscape rearranging all the pieces of light, color, people and architecture into a new panoramic configuration.” -Jay Potter
In the heart of Philadelphia’s, Logan section the inaugural opening of the Rush Arts Philadelphia Gallery II opened Sunday, November 10th showcasing the work of actor, comedian, and photographer Jay Potter. In his latest installation Jay Potter: Along the Way showcases various portraits of people, landscapes, captured from around the world. Keeping in line with the tradition started 20 years ago at the Corridor Gallery in Brooklyn, the intimate Sunday gathering of other artists and patrons filled the room as Potter presented his visually stunning photos of things captured among his travels.
“Along The Way, is a show that combines my sense of humor with observations about the human condition in the context of the cityscape and hopefully captures a few of those unique moments where being observant might build a relationship where none existed before.”
Born in Los Angeles, and currently living between Philadelphia and New York City Potter sees the “City of Brotherly Love” through a different lens.
“To the newcomer, Philadelphia offers a rich visual landscape still replete with “Mom and Pops” which are sadly disappearing at an alarming rate from America’s urban diorama. The loss of individual businesses is further evidence of the destruction of the American dream whereby working hard and saving for the future is not enough to compete with giant, corporate, big box stores which are inherently predatory and desolate hard-working communities.”
“Those survivors that retain their individuality stand out in the sea of gentrified homogeneity capturing both my heart and visual attention. They are a cornerstone of my visual language. Thank you, Philadelphia, for preserving some of the best parts of us.”
Jay’s photographs have been exhibited in several alternative spaces in New York (featuring his work of Coney Island and Cuba) but this exhibition is his first solo show and most prestigious to date. He is deeply honored to participate with RUSH ARTS, Danny Simmons and Noah Kane-Smalls and partner with this dynamic community sharing in the inaugural exhibition of their new gallery.
If interested in visiting the exhibit you have until December 15, 2019.
