Now, who’s hot, who not?/Tell me who rock, who sell out in the stores?-Notorious B.I.G Mo Money Mo Problem
“Hello my loves, I am asking that you stand with me and boycott Netflix for gender bias and color bias…”
Actress and comedienne Mo’Nique took to Instagram, on January 19, 2018 asking fans to boycott Netflix, the popular online streaming service for low balling her on a potential stand-up special. In this case the question at hand, “Is she still relevant? What has she done lately? Why does she deserve more money?”
Mo’Nique states, “I am a Black woman in Hollywood. Why should I have to take it somewhere else when my comedian brothers and sisters are given these offers based off of their resumes and tenure in the business? When you look at resumes, I am the most decorated comedian alive…I am the most decorated comedian alive.”
However social media quickly debunked that statement asking, “What about Whoopi Goldberg?” Which brings us to Mo’Nique’s recent appearances on ABC’s The View.
Has Mo’Nique done impressive things? Yes!
Has she proven she can sell out shows? Yes!
But does she have enough cross-over appeal to translate into dollars, in this world of followers, and likes? Compared to her non-melanated counterparts, No! She compared her offer to that of Amy Schumer’s, so let’s look at the numbers: Instagram shows Mo’Nique with 268K followers vs. Amy’s 6.5M followers. One of Mo’Nique’s argument’s is her last movie Almost Christmas in 2016 made 42.5 millions dollars on a 17 million dollar budget vs. Schumer’s 2017 Snatched grossed 60.8 million dollars with a 42 million dollar budget. Yes her movie did better monetarily but Mo’Nique was not the star of the film. (She wasn’t even in the promotional pics)
Personally I don’t think Amy is funny but she is part of the Hollywood “in” crowd. In light of the #MeToo movement many people support Mo’Nique and stand in solidarity with her. However others want her to have several seats. Social media and media personalities have been relentless in dragging her name through the meme and giphy realms, but is this warranted? Are her claims legit?
Mo’Nique decided to confront radio personality Charlamagne Tha God of The World’s Most Dangerous Radio Show The Breakfast Club for his Donkey of the Day segment. This interview made for great radio, she’s giving us something to talk about and making herself a trending topic, but I was more annoyed with her referring to her husband as “Daddy” throughout the interview. Maybe it was just me but I was completely over her and the interview after awhile. Where’s the answers SWAY?!
First and foremost I used to LOVE Mo’Nique’s stand up. From the small screen to the silver screen her resume is solid. Winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Precious, Mo’Nique had the power to go to new career depths; and she was becoming the new Hollywood starlet. However that was about a decade ago. There have been conversations that she is difficult to work with, she counters by saying this is what happens when you don’t go in the room. Mo’Nique has been very vocal about being banned or “blackballed” in the industry.
All of her appearances have made for great conversation but the question still remains, “Is this about race and gender, and is she worth the money?” In this day of technology and choice how come she didn’t take this opportunity and shop the deal somewhere else?
It’s no secret people of color are treated like second class citizens, but is boycotting going to change anything or is it drawing Mo’Nique further out the entertainment world?
*Sidenote was I the only one annoyed with her calling her husband daddy throughout the interivew?
