Love Is…OWN Network Has Us Swooning

“He was a meteor that hit my life, that I didn’t see coming. He blew up my world and my plans. He unearthed the truth in me, made me take off this mask I’d been wearing so you could see the real light in me. So that I could see the real light in me.”~Nuri on Yasir

Whoever said fairy-tales doesn’t exist, lied!

OWN’s new romantic drama “Love Is...” proves there is a such thing as happy endings. Inspired by the real love story of it’s creators Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, I couldn’t help but get hooked. Set in the 90’s when we still had R&B groups and great television, this show definitely is nostalgic.

Maybe I’m partial because it features two creatives striving to make their mark in the world of entertainment.  Perhaps through my tough exterior I am a sucker for a good love story, and still clinging to the notion I will have the chance to experience that high again. This show takes me through an emotional roller coaster, but I’m enjoying the ride.

It’s been about 4 weeks since the debut, and I get excited like I’m getting the tea with my good girlfriend about her new bae. The love story of being young and trying to find your place is real.  Nuri (Michele Weaver) is beautiful, 26 has her own home and a career in Hollywood.  On the show, Nuri is a writer for “Marvin” of course Mara was a writer for “Martin.” She’s dating a few men and marching to her own tune with such a free spirit. She has her stuff together on paper.

Yasir the oh so fine (William Catlett), is an aspiring director.  Smooth talking, big dreams and a whole lot of mess with him. Let’s be honest he would charm the panties right off of us and we would wake up like this broke so and so… But seriously, Yasir is a dreamer going through a rough phase with being semi-homeless, no job, barely has a car, a kid, but he’s fine. However looks can only get you so far. He’s one of those brothers that is well read, articulate, and that smile will have us all caught up and in our feelings early.Nuri and Yasir

Many of my friends are waiting for the one (myself included), but not many are willing to ride it out with the brother who has dream. It looks so good on television and we root for that guy, in reality most women don’t wait around but for so long.  Once a women is fed up here comes the long tirades of “Niggas ain’t shit” and “It’s all about me” memes. The horror stories of dating over 30, has me shook like it’s a real possibility I could be single forever.

After watching the show a few weeks, I went to social media and saw how inspired women were watching the show, it led me to ask the question, “Do you still believe in love?”

“I love this show! It’s giving me hope that true love is still out there. I was so over love this show has me second guessing if I should give up on finding my him.” Avon J.

Shenee K.,  “It does give me hope, but then I get texts like yesterday and it’s like meh. I would definitely date a Yasir but would I be committed to a Yasir? I don’t know. I need stability. Yasir can’t give that to me right now.”

I guess for now we will all have to wait for our own “Love Is” story to happen and enjoy the whirlwind romance of Nuri and Yasir.
