7 Tips To Get Out Your Own Way

Get Out Your Own Way!

Hey you! Aren’t you tired of putting off your dreams and goals while you are building up someone else’s?

That was me a few years ago. During a random lunch break, I’m scrolling through Instagram and I see a post MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT COMING LATER  TODAY (you know how everything is an announcement on social media). A few hours later the person announces I’m running my company full-time. It felt like someone had punched me in the chest! Now in my mind I should’ve been happy, on the inside I was thinking WTF. Why am I still sitting in this job knowing I want to get out and do my own thing. I wasn’t hating I was more upset with myself! Yet again someone has done the work to live out their dreams and I was left dangling still wishing I was living in my purpose.

So what did I do? Got up off my behind and got to work!

  1. Stop Making Excuses- There will never be a perfect time to get started. Fact: There will always be something happening in your life, but as a small business owner or entrepreneur the show must go on.
  2.  Write Down Your Goals- Place your list where you will see it everyday. I have my goals everywhere, on sticky notes on my mirror,  randomly in my phone, and recorded voice notes. If you have constant reminders of your WHY, you are more inclined to do it. I am an educator by trade so my goals are S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely).
  3. Make Your Blue Print- Now that you have your goals in place, it’s time to really map out HOW you are going to get to your destination.
  4. Be Realistic- Let’s be clear,  you will not be an overnight success story. Most of us have to put in years of work. If you are currently working a 9-5 create an exit strategy. (This does not mean quit your job today and think the money will roll in tomorrow.) It means look at your S.M.A.R.T goals and really assess your life and what is feasible to get you to the next level. Work the side hustle like your day job.
  5. Get Your Mind Right– 90% of being a business owner is mental. You have to mentally be in the game or else you will repeat the pattern of start and stop. When those thoughts of self doubt start creeping in, you have to go back to your WHY and get your head back in the game!
  6. Build a Dope Tribe- I’m sure you are hearing everyone talking about tribe this tribe that. But guess what it is super important to surround yourself with people living what you are trying to do. I mean lets think about this, “How can I person who NEVER owned a successful business tell you how to run a successful business?” Ummm they can’t!
  7. Own it-This ties in with mindset but guess what practice your 30 second elevator pitch. Don’t down play who you are and what you do. Introduce your self as the CEO of your company and talk about what you are doing. Allow it to come second nature. You should be able to talk about your side hustle like you talk about the weather.
